Owen Dolan

A CONCERNED husband has blasted contractors for dumping scaffolding in his front garden area – and putting his wife’s health at risk.

Grandfather Owen Dolan (68) from Manse Street, Coatbridge, gave permission for the a temporary platform to be erected around his home to allow roof repairs to be carried out.

He was promised the scaffolding would be removed 48 hours later so that the paved area outside his front door is kept clear for vehicle access as his wife has a serious heart condition.

But workers dismantled the poles, boards and fittings and left them piled up outside his front door for days after the materials should have been removed.

Mr Dolan said: “I need to keep the area directly outside the door clear so I can get my car in.

“My wife has had two heart attacks and I need to be able to get my car close to the front door in case I need to get her to hospital.

“I contacted the council because we have had problems before with scaffolding staying up for weeks on end.

I was given assurances that it would be put up on Tuesday, May 3 and would be taken away on May 5.
“But they have just stuck it front of the house and it has been there for over a week now.”

Mr Dolan and wife Antoinette (67) have lived in their Manse Street home for 30 years.

They understand the need for work to be carried out on the roof of the block they share with other families.

But they have been left upset when scaffolding is erected outside their front door and then left there for weeks, long after the roof work has been carried out.

Owen said: “At the end of last year one of the guys told me ‘we’ll take it away tomorrow’ but it was there for seven weeks after that.

“I don’t mind them doing repairs but I don’t want them leaving scaffolding lying about.

“I want them taking it away when they are finished.”

The Advertiser contacted North Lanarkshire Council to pass on Mr Dolan’s concerns.

After our call the poles and boards which were piled up outside the Manse Street address were soon uplifted.

Raymond Boyd, service delivery manager in housing and social work services, said: “Our contractor took down the scaffolding on May 5 however, unfortunately, the materials were not removed from the site that day. The scaffolding has now been removed and our contractors have apologised for the inconvenience.”
