BBC News - Scaffolding in Southsea collapses onto cars

Scaffolding on a hotel in Portsmouth has collapsed and crushed six parked cars.

It is believed strong winds brought down the scaffolding and railings on The Royal Beach Hotel in St Helen's Parade, Southsea just after 08:00 BST.

Hampshire Police said no-one was in the vehicles when the scaffolding fell and there were no injuries.

The area around Alhambra Road has been cordoned off while a structural engineer carries out safety checks.

The scaffolding was in place up to the fifth floor of the hotel for it to be painted.

Driver Barry Fleming, who only passed his driving test last week, owned one of the cars crushed by the falling scaffolding.

He said: "Thank goodness nobody was killed, that's the main thing.

"But I'm a bit upset about the car. I haven't been allowed to get under there to have a good look but I think it's a write-off."

Just seen this, it was a monoflexed scaffold which must be what brought it down in the high wind. Lacking ties?

Think I saw the sign on it was "Initial Scaffolding" but don't know that for definite.

Some idiot probably said to tie to the balconies, they look strong enough.

looks like a scaffold solutions sign flinty initials sign is different

gotta say it does get blowy down there but no excuse for poor work

Just had a look at that picture and it isn't clear, it's what I saw on the news earlier where I thought it said "initial". Sure we'll find out soon enough.

Be a while before we find out if it wasn't properly tied or just took way more wind force than it should!

looking at tube colour id say that was sussex scaffolding or someone that rents of trad hire and sales

I suppoe you would aye but do you start stripping what was the inside standards first were would ya start lol

Picture showing some lip ties on the end of the scaffold.....

they were striking it this morning not long after it fell
there local to me and pretty sure on the sign, he also uses pink paint

as you can see theres a lack of aberdeen transoms at the braces which are meant to be there with sheeted scaffolds now, none the less really as probably no design anyway

gotta be a prosecution job , i got fined 35 grand last year for 3 missing ties and no design

just hse mate ..................... no collapse , was done as no design 2 alli beams over a pitched roof and 3 ties missing

toss ers

£35,000!?!?!

And who ends up with that money?

Wonder how much they'll get fined for this, I can see a few more people coming job hunting on the forum after it all.....
