I came across this question on the IOSH forum, thought you could throw some light on it?

hi,
i am looking for some guidance on the use of external scaffold as means of escape, in the event of fire. the building in question is undergoing extensive internal refurb works and is 3 floors in height. can anyone point me in the right direction.

well we have done plenty of fire escapes and tempory staircases over the years so must be acceptable so long as done to a design

I would imagine a system staircase like Cuplock, Haki or similar would be fine. Cuplock assuming metal battens were used and not wooden.

If the stairs are fixed to an existing scaffold there may be issues with the access from the building, across the scaffolding and onto the stairs if traditional boards are used. This would obviously be dependent on the severity of the fire and proximity of the fire to any boarded lifts.
