Scaffolder falls through roof while fitting handrails

Grant Prior | Wed 24th October | 10:42

A Dartford Scaffolding contractor and its director have been prosecuted for failing to provide a safe way of working on a fragile roof after a worker fell and suffered serious injuries.

James Froud, 22, from Gillingham, was hospitalised for ten days and had to take several months off work whilst wearing a back brace and using crutches as a result of the incident at Siemens Windpower Compound at Ramsgate Port on October 12 last year.

Canterbury Magistrates heard that Froud, a scaffold labourer working for London and South Scaffolding Ltd, was fitting hand rails on a fragile rooftop when he fell seven metres through the skylight.

The HSE found that the company and director Gary Peck were aware of how fragile the roof and skylights were, but failed to take adequate measures to prevent a fall, such as using a mobile elevating work platform or using staging fitted with guard rails.

London and South Scaffolding Ltd and Gary Peck both pleaded guilty safety charges.

The company was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £1,000 in costs. Peck was fined £15,000 and ordered to pay £2,000 in costs.

After the hearing, HSE Inspector Caroline Penwill said: “The company and director were aware that the roof and skylights were fragile, but did not take any steps to avoid access to the roof or provide a safe method of work.

“Had they done so, James’ fall could have been prevented

“Companies and directors need to carefully consider the risks of working at height and identify and implement adequate controls to protect their employees.”

We were asked to price a handrail on a sloping metal sheeted roof today... I told him to use cherry pickers and walked away...

A similar thing happened here a while back but it was the roofer who fell. We just built what was asked of us for a small repair but the roofer who is a bit of a window licker fancied surfing the roof to admire the view and fell through the sky light straight into some class or other. We were back erecting an internal scaffold and extend the small scaffold to catch any falling body on the angle, cost them a few quid for a daft wee repair.

Sometimes you just couldnt charge enough to do these jobs ,when one of your lads ends up falling 7 meters and is seriously hurt , hope the young fella makes a full recovery

Maybe an eye test wouldn't go amiss as well though.

We done work for a biggish builder who didnt want to pay for anything , until there site manager fell through a sky light and broke his back , there excuse for not having scaffolding , "it would have been to expensive " we ended up doing around 3k worth AFTER the manager broke his back , i really cat work these companys logic out.

The cement type corrogated sheets sometimes just have a clear sheet every so often and in time they get to look the same as the rest and its almost impossible to see them

Me neither, even on privates I feel like screaming. Seen one poor old bloke up on his roof with bitumen painting his slates but ffs at that age if you fall and break something you may never recover. I think we probably all suffer from it will never happen to me.

I shoudnt joke me old man had a heart attack bout 8 weeks go on site , He is making a full recovery 2 stints later and no more fags , but when i went to site the next day i found out he had been trying to move a 6 meter steel ladder through a fully boarded job and re position it at 67 years of age , hard enough when your 30 , mad thing was he only went to sign the scaff tags .

Really sorry to hear that, glad he is making a full recovery. It is going to be difficult trying to tell him his days of shifting beams are over. One of our young boys has had a bit of bad news as well, unfortunately his dad didn't make it.
