I'm currently a part 2 scaffolder, trying to get into design. I'm working towards a HNC at college as we speak. as well as having a HNC i no experience is very important. I'm looking for a company or even a freelancer to gain experience within the industry. my way of thinking is if i start gaining experience now at least i'll have a foot in the door when i do qualify for HNC rather than nobody taking me on because of lack of experience and having to start a fresh again. any help or pointers would be much appreciated, thanks

Try looking at draughtsman/CAD technician jobs to get your foot in the door. The money will be poo as a trainee but that comes with the territory.

If you haven't already, sign up with the ICE or IStructE; they have job opportunities and good information about what's going on in your area. Plus it looks good to potential employers if registered with the institutes.

Are just looking at temporary works or are looking at all areas?

Thanks nick. I wouldn't pigeon hole myself to be honest, I would look into all areas all depends what opportunities come up really. I will sign up to ice and istructe today to get some more info etc fingers crossed.

No worries mate. What area are you in?

I'm doing the HNC in civil engineering. But that's once a week. I'm currently still scaffolding around Kent/Essex area

I don't know about your age or what responsibilities you have but it may be worth holding off on coming off the tools till yo have your HNC, just so you're worth a few more pennies.

Other than that, Tony Gee and Partners has an office in Ashford, Kent and (as far as i know) have never shied away from taking on a new face.

The only other thing i can suggest is emailing local engineering firms your C.V. with a brief covering letter outlining your current position.

is civil engineering enough to get a job in scaff-design ? i thought you would need a structural engineering qulaification, can you let me know ..

Can you do any of these courses distant learning do you know ?

either way good luck mate

It doesn't really matter whether you do civil or structural. As far as I'm aware neither of these qualifications are available through distance learning. The open university offers a general engineering degree but I don't know if that's available to all countries.
