Safety inspectors issue scaffold board warning | Construction News | The Construction Index

Contractors are being warned against the use of substandard scaffold boards.

The warning comes from the Health & Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) after inspectors found widespread use of damaged or defective boards.

Contractors are advised to use only boards that are marked as manufactured to BS 2482:2009 and are undamaged. They should also be inspected before use, and regularly thereafter.

Boards showing any sign of rot or damage, including cracks or loose knots, should not be used

Examples of misuse found by HSENI inspectors on site visits include:
•using boards to assist vehicles over soft ground
•driving vehicles over boards accidentally
•using boards as ramps for wheel barrow access
•throwing or dropping boards from heights
•over-loading or storing heavy objects on boards.

Storing heavy objects on boards ? aint that what we use them for on loading bays and gantry's

May explain why I got a call from an Irish mob wanting to come over and test all my boards. We are pretty ruthless with our boards, bin them or cut them and re-band them at the first sign of trouble.

Nothing about brickies wailing 6" nails in them??? Ooh yeasorry thats aloud, because brickies get wrapped in cotton wool dont they?

Then when your labourer slides the board off his shoulder andhas to go to hospital, the agents bat it right back to us saying youu should have checked them.

Think they need to add that one, as its not ever a scaff miss using the boards its the other dumb f11ckers who need educating.

Rant over.
