Locked out construction workers at Saltend in Hull spread protests to a British Sugar plant in Newark last week. Some 400 workers have been in dispute since March.
Saltend is the second biggest construction site in Britain. A huge company, Vivergo Fuels, runs it. BP, British Sugar and DuPont own it.
Tensions erupted when Vivergo sacked the subcontractor Redhall Engineering Solutions. Bosses refused to transfer existing workers to a new contractor.
GMB union organiser, Phil Whitehurst, says British Sugar, along with BP and DuPont, will continue to be “hit” until the dispute is resolved.
“Vivergo are trying to buy their way out. But this is not about money,” he said.
A national construction shop stewards meeting last week agreed to a national day of action if the dispute is not resolved this week
