Protest group hit Middlesbrough town centre
SCORES of protesters hit the streets of Middlesbrough to highlight the plight of hundreds of construction workers locked out of work.
The members of the Unite and GMB unions began their protest in Middlesbrough’s Centre Square against the removal of a contract for them to work on a bio-ethanol plant at BP Salt End, near Hull.
The unions say 450 construction workers - including around 200 from Teesside - were locked out of the plant when Vivergo Fuels cancelled the contract with pipework subcontractor Redhall Group.
The protesters - who are now demanding the complete reinstatement of the Redhall workforce onto the project - wanted to bring their story to the attention of Middlesbrough Mayor Ray Mallon.
The group then moved on to Borough Road with their standards and banners raised aloft.
One, which read: “We demand our jobs back,” summed up the mood of the men.
Brian Wilson, a 53-year-old welder from Acklam, said: “This can’t be allowed to happen. It’s a kick in the teeth for the working man.”
Another worker left unemployed by the contract cancellation was 61-year-old pipe fitter Ian McPike from Stockton.
Mr McPike was employed by Redhall, who lost the contract on Friday, March 11.
He said: “We returned on the Monday to BP Salt End to find we had been locked out.
“In the meantime we as a work force have been left in limbo. For four weeks now we have been left without work. They are still talking from time to time but not enough as far as we are concerned.”
An earlier protest by the workers at Wilton International on Wednesday brought traffic around Redcar and South Bank to a standstill.
The demonstration caused huge tailbacks leaving many commuters a delayed journey of more than an hour.
The members have vowed to continue their protest and hope to gain the support of the public and their Teesside Members of Parliament.

As tired as I am of saying this - and as tired I'm sure you are of hearign it - I'll say it again ... The Unions in this country are the reason our jobs are going abroad. They single handedly fund the labour party who have deconstructed our manufacturing industry over the course of their terms in office (and the Tory party where not much better at protecting us) But the Unions need to face the facts - if they had more political swing by forcing the labour party to protect British jobs this would not have become a daily occurance. Stop voting for communists and if you are in the union make sure you tick the box that stops Labour funding. We desperately need a Nationalist party to preserve what little we have left.

These are contractors (disposable workers) getting £1,000 a week complaining that they are out of work.
This is the nature of being a contractor.
What is their point? Just get another contract job like they have done for the past decade and lived like a kings.
Why protest in Middlesbrough when the work was in Hull. Should i protest at Hull because the Boro are not doing that well??

unbelievable.
got to agree with the other posts - if you are a contractor dont be surprised when your contract gets ended. especially if you are failing as a contractor and not meeting what you are supposed to be done! I.e. the reason why your there in the first place!
dont then compound the issue by attempting to get sympathy by blocking thousands of workers from getting to work like they did the other day, and also preventing other businesses at wilton from operating!
i work as a contractor, and i work in sales. If something has gone wrong I fully realise it is our fault, and dont turn up at the business with a picket. the damage this must be doing to redhall's reputation must be huge! who would want to do business with them after this reaction and display of service???

A load of Libyans chanting today "Gadaffi has to go". If he goes are they going to go back to Libya? If so I'll go over there and get rid of him myself.
No, I didn't think they would.
