Proposal: H&S Self Help Support Study Group

To all and Sundry in General and Forum Members in Particular.

During my comparatively short time as an active Member of our Forum and on reading several Posts and Threads it has became apparent that there are quite a number of Forum Members that aspire to gaining H&S recognised Qualifications.

In the interest of giving the opportunity to realizing these aspirations, I would like to establish if there is a consensus of opinion as to whether their is a need to establish a H&S Self Help Support Study Group ?.

It's up to YOU---Do YOU want to Regulate our Industry ?, OR do you want to hand it to a every Man and his Dog ?... March or Die, Lads.

As in life respect has to be earned,we would all take more notice if experienced scaffold personal were monitoring the scaffold industry,and being consulted as to how the trade could be improved,maybe then commen sense would prevail.

I agree with your posting mate, we are the guys at the pointy end and anything that can and would aid a scaff in his/her daily tasks and understanding of new,old or forthcoming regs is a big YES Yes.

You can count on me to help on anything regarding this venture, i have quite a lot of materials that could be used ie Risk assessments,Method statement templates,powerpoints and the full TG20:08 doc on pdf.

I have been a Scaff for 31 years, now Advanced for the last 10 year or more, i am a UCATT shop steward and Safety rep, Representative of Employees Safety, Appointed person for site safety and also a member of IOSH with the post nominal of Tech IOSH.

I for one think thats a great idea, it will help dispel a lot of the myths regarding the subject and give genuine and honest information to lads or indeed lasses who want to undertake courses in the H&S field.

It can only be good for our industry (As in mentioned in another thread) that people who have actually had some "Tool Time" push themselves into this field stopping what I have often witnessed as total incompetents carrying out scaffold inspections or quoting regs that are out of date or just plain wrong, even an HSE inspector I might add.

Would be great to Regulate our own Industry. But when you are not even allowed to control your own gangs on sites without know it all agents telling you how to do your job & talk to you like you were something they stepped in I think it would be hard to get anyone other than a scaffolder to listen to you. Especially when one of our govening bodies NASC set out impossible tasks to follow. I feel gone are the days of trying to undertake target work to make a half decent living!!

The response to the call is indeed testament to the camaraderie and the spirit of collaberation that still exists between Scaffold Erectors.

Now that we have established that there is a General consensus of opinion that there is a need for a H&S Self Help Support Study Group, where do we go from here ?---

Nominate, Delegate and or other wise Press Gang, Mentor's and Coaches ?.

Identify our Target Audience and the Subjects they wish to Study, i.e.

Target Audience: Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Veteran.

Subjects: General Occupational H&S, Specialist Scaffolding orientated H&S, CAD Scaffolding Design.

The afore mentioned are merely indicators, input from Forum Members is vital for this proposal to move forward, Furthermore, if this Group is to be established there will have to be a concerted effort by all the interested Parties.

In the interest of guidance, perhaps our SF Admin should come into the loop on this one ?.

The only way that you can beat these bombastic buffoons is to rise above them, beat them at their own game---get an education and give them a red face when they make an ass of them selfs---if that doesn't work---tak him rood the back O the T shack and batter his c*^~t in.

Been doing that every time someone changes the rules. Benn scaffolding since 16 now 45. Used to be fun then the double hand rail came in, no shorts on site wore a dress. Safety glases got funky safety sun glasses etc etc. Advanced rail what a total waste of time. The lost time & extra hours & extra cost is going to kill or completely split the industry. Less & less people are getting into scaffolding & its going to get worse. Nothing wrong with controled tunneling.
And yes I have taken the **** round the corner & kicked his f***** head in when he gets on my ample tits!!!!!!!!!!!

I am sure that there are a number of Scaffolder who have came through the ranks and now occupy positions of influence within our Industry.

Perhaps, a word in the right direction will see Mentors/Coaches stepping up to the plate.

garry, have been to link, but as yet no one has started the thread. are we waiting for admin to give us a lead or is someone going to take the bull by the horns. i personally am very interested in the h+s side of our industry and would like to pick other peoples brains,so can some one take take the reins?

Time Management may be an issue with some, however, the donation of Material, i.e. Presentations on Fall Arrest, Rescue Plans, Course Modules, Past Exam Papers, ect---would all be welcome---so, time is not an issue, it is the willingness to contubute that makes the difference.

Thanks for that willwall---you are now penciled in for Consultation.

Any suggestions for donations of Material or Data will be gratefully received and faithfully applied.
