Excuse me for asking, I hope you don't mind. Just doing a little market research on behalf of son, who just started his proper full time job a month ago (yippee!!).

Anyway, he's marketing assistant for a company that provide satellite broadband... no cables required.

What internet facilities do you get out on the rigs? Do you take your own PC's or use theirs? Do they allow any kind of VOIP (like skype).. what are mobile connections like?

Don't think I'm trying to sell anything, I'm just asking for him.

Cheers! :)

The internet connections offshore are via satelite . Some platforms do have wi fi but it`s very slow and if some bozo decides to download something it grinds to a halt . Basically internet offshore is pish .

It's been a while but most took their own laptops off-shore with them some used the many in the office, connection was erratic at best but you learn to deal with it and to be honest I had never heard of Skype the last time I was on a rig. If Scaffarobbo still say's it's poor then it's still really poor and probably very difficult to improve on as they have technology coming out their backsides on they bucket's.

they all hjave internet connection via satelite as robbo said, ans yes they are pretty slow.
the skype thing drags everything down so its not encouraged, half the time the phones dont work so if you can check yer e-mails all the better.
i remember having to pay for my calls offshore so i try not to moan too much, but then again thats why they call me happy:nuts:

It wasn't that long ago we paid for calls, was it? It certainly doesn't feel like it, it was really annoying though with these daft phone cards.

Standing in a line with your phonecard in hand waiting for the red light to come on , it really was like the nick . I also remember radio phones when anyone in the radio room could hear all the conversations (not that I ever did anything like that .

haha, happy day's.

The more I think about it the more I remember it really was rank rotten out there.

I aint been on a rig before, though one day for the experience id like to have a few trips - to see if i can cut the mustard.

I was under the impression that after Piper Alpha, the whole Oil Rig way of life was overhauled... Like now you have accommodation rigs, that are pretty 'ship-shape' with things like a Gym, WiFi and colour TVs in your rooms?

Only what ive been told.
Is this not true?

Thanks for the feedback. I'll pass it along to him... another area to target! The satellite he's marketing is new to this country, different to sky apparently.

Anyway, useful info, so thanks again :)

As I said Jason it has been a while but from my experience the accommodation barges were usually the worst, they did have half descent gyms as nobody used them much, colour TV in the room was always for the lifers who had their own seat on the chopper not for the contractor's like the scaff's. You sat in either the non smokers rec room at night with the rest of the glums and watched Sky news or you sat in the smokers rec room and watched the simpsons till the porn came on then headed to the nest.:embarrest:

Might have changed a bit but I have been on some rust bucket's out there.

i done a few trips on the Tern about 8 year ago, sh1thole
I also done a couple on the Elgin Franklin, which was brand new at the time, they were worlds apart,
PS my last trip was on the Tern, hell
and i only done six:sick:

Elgin-Franklin was the last rig I was on. Spent most of the hook up in some hole of a barge but eventually got a berth on the rig and that was magic. Maybe I met you out there Jakdan?

the boys on the same shift were: if i remember correctly
bob tait -geordie
decka wright- geordie also on hook up
dave tait- all related
bobby? was also on the hook up, played the guitar, glasgow originally but lived further north, great lad.
sandy? little glaswegian i think.

Was he over St. Pancras trainstation, in London for Palmers in 2005?
If so, i worked with him a little bit, he seemed a nice fella.

Maybe back to back jakdan, I am rubbish at remembering names. The only guitar player I remember was a Fifer and you guessed it I cant remember his name.:embarrest:

I thought it was a good job and was on it till the end, got down manned a few times but it was always worth it, got my 40hours a few times and spent Christmas and new year in the house.

The main guy I remember was big LoL from Middlesbrough, a funny big guy but friggin ugly.:D
