Have a good trip

Have a good trip Orac

Not sure why you called yourself after a pespex box.

Maybe it is because Orac, seen here as a perspex cube, but actually a fussy pedantic portable computer, who told the team where to go. Often.

Do you have similar characteristics. LOL

All the best.

I hope I'm not alone when I say I found this post distasteful. Slagging off a working man prepared to travel at his own expense to put bread on the table,
Shame on you

Unfortunately agency work has become a necessary evil for many us unfortunate enough not able to play on the hallowed turf of a blue book site

However it can be lucrative if you now how to work the system ;) Personally I will not work for an agency that don't allow me to use my own choice of umbrella company for payment, a reputable agency shouldn't have a problem with this .

My own personal preference is I-Paye - Home who operate a system where you become a PAYE Employee of the end client or agency having your NI stamp paid weekly and accruing holiday pay.

A weekly expense sheet is submitted along with receipts for digs, car parking ,public transport etc and a mileage allowance is also claimed for traveling to and from your home address to digs. also £25 per night subsistence and £5 per night for incidentals .

All the expenses mileage and subsistence along with the i-paye fee (around £30 depending on which option you go for) are added up and deducted from your gross , you then pay Tax and NI at the normal rates on the remainder .

To me the bottom line is the dollar in the bank at the end of the week and the reality of the situation is you end up paying around 12% of your gross in Tax and NI .

As ORAC says £17 per hr across the board is not a bad rate and I would agree. Lets do the math, 7 12hr shifts at £17 per hr = £1428 gross

£1428 - 12% = £1256.64 take home :D

There is no need to be wary of the "i-paye system" Its all legit its the agencies were you need careful, I personally wont entertain an agency that insists on using a "preferred partner" to process payments as you have no control over the fees charged. The umbrella company often give kick backs to the agency or they are both part of the same organization.

thanks for the support guys, where i'm base east lancashire there arn't many blue or grey book sites, so find myself travelling, went to lindsey oil refinery on friday 2hr drive not nice setting off at 5am, got there my name wasn't down for induction & it was full so wasted trip.

i get paid weekly into bank i don't use an umbrella company just get 20% deducted for tax & i save every receipt i get.:)
