AN OIL-RIG worker died when he fell into the North Sea. Lee Bertram plunged from the rig stationed about 120 miles north east of Lerwick in Shetland on Thursday.
The 37-year-old was on Shell’s Brent Charlie platform for Aberdeen-based BIS Salamis.
He was working from ropes on the oil platform when he fell.
Mr Bertram, who comes from Northumberland, was pulled from the water after the alarm was raised by work colleagues and taken to a nearby ship, but he died soon after.
A Shell spokeswoman said: “Shell UK Limited can confirm that a man rescued from the North Sea after falling overboard from the Brent Charlie platform subsequently died on board the standby vessel Ocean Spey.
“The man was recovered from the water after workmates raised the alarm. Workers on the Shell-operated platform were called to muster when the alarm was raised.
“All personnel were accounted for and the relevant authorities have been notified.”
The incident happened at about 11.20am and nobody else was hurt.
A report was due to be submitted to the procurator fiscal and a joint investigation by Grampian Police and the Health and Safety Executive into the incident is now under way.
A memorial fund has been set up by Mr Bertram’s friends and colleague s.
On the website rope access jobs, rope access companies, rope access training equipment suppliers. Also covering rigging, inspection and ndt , his colleague Scott Wither wrote: “I’m sure you are all aware of the tragic and fatal accident involving a rope access worker that happened on Thursday.
“Lee Bertram tragically died while carrying out rope access work on the Brent Charlie platform.
“I know that it has been a shock to all of us rope techs and the rest of the offshore industry.
“Lee has left behind a family and friends who are totally devastated by this terrible loss.
“Due to the overwhelming support from everybody in the industry, I have set up a PayPal account to allow anybody who wishes to donate to help his grieving family get through these sad times.”
