New recruits start work at SSI steel plant

by Evening GazetteOct 11 2011

THE first new recruits for SSI’s Teesside steel plant start work today.

The Thai steel company is recruiting 1,000 new staff for the former Teesside Cast Products plant at Redcar.

The new positions add to the 700-strong workforce already employed at the site.

Today almost 100 staff were beginning their induction programme to start work at the site.

The company said some of the recruits were former steel workers.

SSI signed a memorandum of understanding with Tata Steel to buy TCP in a multi-million pound deal in August last year.

The deal was signed in February and finally completed in March.

The company will re-ignite the Redcar blast furnace on December 8.

SSI plans to ship 3.5 million tonnes of steel from Teesside to Thailand each year once the blast furnace is fired up again.
