New jobs pledge after closure of Alcan smelter

The Journal

Feb 2 2012

AN assurance has been given to a North East MP that help will be available to attract new businesses and jobs to an area facing the loss of its biggest private sector employer.

The Government has said enterprise zone status will be extended to the Port of Blyth and the East Sleekburn area in light of the looming closure of the 512-job Rio Tinto Alcan aluminium smelter at Lynemouth.

Now Berwick MP Sir Alan Beith has been assured by Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander that the move will also mean enhanced capital allowances will be available to attract new businesses to Northumberland.

In the House of Commons, Sir Alan said the extension of the zone would help bring jobs for his constituents. Afterwards he said: “Securing the extension, and making sure it is big enough to attract large businesses, were crucial first steps. We now need to make sure we are able to use all the tools at our disposal to generate business and employment. Regeneration is crucial, particularly with the potential closure of the smelter at Lynemouth.”
