Engineers are about to start work on a £50m upgrade and refurbishment of a 400,000 volt line which crosses the county.

The eight-month project to rewire the 52 mile high-voltage line, which runs between Norwich and Walpole, near Wisbech, will start later this month.

National Grid has said the work will help increase the capacity of the major power line, which was built in the early 1960s.

Some 100 engineers will work on the project to renew the conductors and fittings and carry out strengthening work on some of the 224 pylons that carry the wires.

The project will also see the fitting of 56,000 new insulators to the arms of the pylons and 9,000 new line spacers, which keep the wires separate from each other.

Simon Chandler, project manager, said: “This work will help to ensure that our electricity supply continues to serve us safely, reliably and efficiently for decades to come, securing our energy supply for future generations.

“Safety is our top priority and we apologise for any inconvenience caused by our works. Every effort will be made to ensure this work is carried out as safely, quickly and efficiently as possible and to minimise any impact on local people.”

National Grid has said most of the work will take place in agricultural fields, away from roads and most properties, and with little impact on the public.

The most visible sign of the project will be large scaffolding structures built where the overhead line crosses roads, railways, rivers and footpaths, a company spokesman added.

Some roads, footpaths and bridleways will also be temporarily closed during these works. The first road closure will take place on Saturday, April 16 and Sunday, April 17 on the A47, from the junction with Main Road, Tilney All Saints to the junction with Church Road, Terrington St John

I know TONE have a yard out this way, and they have been doing some line crossings for a while now

Good to see someone getting work released:)
