GAYTON: Magistrate tells defendant not to be ridiculous

Published on Tuesday 24 July 2012 12:47

A SCAFFOLDER was told to stop being ridiculous when he claimed he could not carry out community service on medical grounds.

Shane Francis, of Nicholas Close, Gayton, was ordered to carry out 50 hours of unpaid work by Lynn magistrates in May, but has only turned up for duty once since, claiming he has a medical problem with his foot which means he can only perform light duties.

After hearing that no medical reports had been produced from a doctor, District Judge Peter Veits, said: “This is ridiculous.

“If you’re well enough to be a scaffolder then you’re well enough to do your community order.”

In a hearing at Lynn yesterday, Mr Veits imposed a further 16 hours on Francis, making a total of 66 hours to complete and told him he should get to work quickly to get it out of the way.
