BBC News - Lorry rips down Dorchester scaffolding

A lorry has crashed into a scaffolding tower in a Dorset town centre, bringing traffic to a standstill.

The lorry driver was apparently trying to turn into North Square in Dorchester from High West Street.

Several levels of scaffolding in front of a jewellers store were brought down and ended up on top of the vehicle.

Dorset Police said nobody was hurt but the main road through the town had to be closed for several hours. The Health and Safety Executive was informed.

Eyewitness Scott Duncan said: "The whole lot just came down into the High Street.

"I thought it was a bit of an unusual sound, looked up and the scaffolding wasn't on the front of the shop."

Sgt Anita Arliss, of Dorset Police, said: "It appears the the lorry has been coming up High West Street, has attempted sharp right turn, has missed the turn and caught the scaffolding tower causing it to fall."

The scaffolding was dismantled and removed and the road was later reopened.

Just another reminder to tie the jobs in no matter how small. Don't think a couple of ties would have helped much against that big truck right enough but it would certainly have softened the blow on the impending investigation.

Steve, what would the result of any investigation if the job was minted tied, tested and all permits in place and adhered to?

If the job was top notch and adhered to everything i think it would just be classed as an accident due to the wagon pulling it over.

Saying that i aint got a clue!

That's a quality bit of scaffolding! Look at it retaining it's shape despite an ogre in a truck whacking it!

I cant see whats wrong with it.
Thats what my jobs usually look like, even if its not hit by a lorry.

Maybe because ive been using an old HP Sauce bottle filled with water, instead of a Spirit Level, lol.

i had a job pulled over like that once, the lorry firm tried to claim for a new roof, till i counter claimed for a grands worth of gear.:D

Did you get it numbnuts? It was years ago now but it still irks me that after a 30 ton front end loader ripped down one of my jobs, luckily nobody on it on top of a few motors as well. The investigation cleared us of any wrong doing but the company involved had bigger wallets than me and knew chasing them could quite possibly put such a small concern to the wall, the result not a farthing for thousands of pounds worth of gear.
