Hello All

I would appreciate any help or advice on how i would get into scaffolding.
I'm an ex chippie that's bored of banging in the same old nails into the same old bit of wood as you guys would put it

I'm 41 fairly fit, based in East London

Thanks in advance

John

Wecome to the forum john....... no disrespect mate, but 41 and want to be a scaffolder. Surely as a chippy you've a more easier life than us guys that have to throw planks and poles all day as you boys put it. With not doing it before you would start at the bottom as a labourer, on crap money and it'll take you at least 2-3 years before your ready to take your part 1/2. And even then your not garenteed a top wage. Im 33 pal and only just getting what i think im worth ( others may disagree), and i've been on the tools 17yrs..
I've been as honest as possible, all the best in your decision pal..

Regards den

I was a chippie went willesden college for year when I was 17 and jacked it in for scaffolding overall I'd say I mate the right choice literally go thru the yellow pages ring everyone, if I was u I'd try and get on site work starting street work at ur time off life ull be fooked mate good luck

I agree with scaffy your to old mate,by the time you become fully trained you'll be 44 or 45. Being your age your body won't take take the constant heavy lifting on a building site or price work.i would suggest starting on a blue book site on day work as a labourer,it'll be a good place to start.

Dont be listening to these lads mate , if you can catch 5 foot tubes from 3 lifts up your hired ;)

Cheers for the info lads.
at 41 i'm hardly past it , not scared of a bit of hard graft, i work as a pyro weekends too, so quite used to lugging heavy gear across muddy fields all day and de-rigging till 2am .. 5ft tubes seems a bit gay.. maybe 21's phillious .

Should fit in easy then - can still use ur hammer on quickstage & change ur pozie drive on ur impact drvr to a scaff socket & hey presto ur a scaff....easy as that -dont worry about ur age or a tckt just go a a 5 day supervisors course that gets u a golden tckt & blag it everone will assume that due to ur age uve been doin it 4 years....after all no-one would he stupid enough to jack in a perfectley good trade & work the rest of his life for peanuts as a overgrown labourer....or would they;)

Oooooo........now that is a challenge phil....the old galv ones should be fun...
Dont give all our secrets away, every one will want to be a scaff....lol

Trust me, the chippy trade is no-where near as good as it used to be

The Chippy Trade Is Nowhere Near As Good As It Used To Be, Neither Is The Scaffolding Industry, All The Best And All That Jazz John But I Think Your Off Your Trumpet Mate, The Scaffolding Industry Is Nowhere Near What It Was Ten Years Ago Mate, In Fact Its Getting Harder To Make Good Money, What With Sg4;10 And All The Rest Of The Crap We Have To Tolerate From Some Two Day Course Know It All ****.

Gerscaff is right John, you are obviously needing a change though so if I was you, I would give it a go. You have seen them doing it for years, you are on the sites so you know the craic there. I suspect you will be back banging nails for a living fairly sharpish but if you don't try you will never know. Good luck whatever you decide and let us know how it goes.
