Hi all, I am seeing a lot of comments from people saying that they have applied to lots of jobs but not been selected, wondering why this is the case. The main reason in most cases is just simply volume of people applying for most jobs. However, I have just looked into a few and can see very clear reasons why some people stand a much better chance than others, in most cases its the same problem - not enough details!!
Your actual cape applciation page should have all the info we need to see straight away, recent work experience, skills, cards, security clearance etc. When checking on those of people who aren't being selected, most of this first page is blank, this tells us nothing about you.
The next problem is also very common - when we go into look into the CV you have uploaded, in a lot of cases the CV's are out of date or not containing enough info. You CV should list all of your work history, from your first job to your most recent, this should include start and finish date, employer, duties and what your were doing there. Ideally there should be no gaps (this means no periods of time that can't be accounted for) if you werent working for more than a month - say that. Filling gaps with "looking for work", "undertaking training" or "gaining new qualifications" is much better than just leaving a gap where as a recruiter we have to assume the worst.
If you haven't been working recently, when compared to somebody who has been, your chances are reduced. There isn't much you can do about this, but you can use that time effectively. If you aren't working, upskill - get more training, volounteer for work anywhere that you can. An employer will always look at voluntary work as an indicator a a good work ethic, and again your chances will have increased.
So, before you post a comment asking us to look into why you haven't been successful (which we will happily do when we have the time) spend 15 minutes updating your profile, fill in all the blanks, update your CV and take it as an opportunity to sell yourself. Those 15 mins could make a massive difference!
