hello and thankyou for reading. i am currently in the army but I will be signing off in January 2015 which seems like a long time away but i need to start looking for a job the now. i have always wanted a job in scaffolding but when i left school jobs/apprenticeships where hard to come by and I never managed to get an apprenticeship so i decided to join the army. I know i will be older than most people looking to start a career in scaffolding (23) but i do have good life experience, discipline, time keeping and a willingness to constantly train and learn new skills. Hopefully i could get an apprenticeship or something similar, it would make my world. I am from glasgow and can drive, I also have a cat c driving license which i hope would help employers? Also is their anyway of me doing courses for example that would make it easier for me to get into a job

thanks again Anton

Welcome Anton91, Just a thought pal but have you thought about going in to Rope Access as there's a quite a few ex army personal working offshore on the rigs who'm had retraining before being ending their service, think by phoning around Access companies stating your plight might be the way forward mate, hope this be of some help in the mean time i wish you all the luck.

Cheers mate. i have looked at the rigs, id love to get on them. few of the boys thats been in here have left to do it but it just seems to be who you know. ive got just over a year to look. so hopefully i will get something. thanks for the info!

You can do a one day course for a scaffolding labour course that could help best of luck

There is a few firms that would take you on as a trainee,I know Lyndons do,am sure others on here will name a few more, first things first would be to do your touch screen health & safety course, you can do that anytime as it lasts for 2 years, good luck in your search.

Welcome to the forum mate. Hope you find something soon.

If you book your h+s touch screen test about £30.
Then you need a one day induction course its called cots about £100.
Ring round all local firms explaining your ambitions.
And if poss speak to your sarg or recruitment officer and see if they can help you towards your scaffold tickets.

cheers for the advice. im sure the touch screen and 1 day course will help me with my chances of getting a job hopefully

welcome to the scaffolders forum Anton

You are correct in stating that getting a decent job in the scaffolding game is down to who you know, but he ho you have found us lot plenty of help and advice for free

Does the army still fund you on course,s prior to de-mob ?

Scaffolders labourers card lasts for 5 years and then trainee lasts a total of 3 years before u have to complete part2

as for work I'm not sure regarding glasgow would you be willing to travel??? For example london? There's a few companies that would take on an apprentice ie tickets/training, as ex army you will find it a lot easier to get a start that the average 23 year old walking off the street ( simply because of ur mindset they know that ur mentally tough enough and will stick with it ) if london is an option remember my name and get in touch and ill sort out a few good contacts for ya ;) take care out there anton

Shame ur not down here i'd start u on the apprenice route straight away. Dont forget ur enhanced learning credits& resettlement course will provide u with the start u need. Get your resettlement course onto a part1 course then use ur ELCs to complete both part2 & b4 they run out then ur advanced....
The part1 ticket will help u get a start as its now required over experiance, but i know works grim up that end of the world so if your serious & wanna earn better money u may have to move down south, building games about to boom again so dont get left behind.
Oh yeh & welcolme to the real world where ur csm aint gonna tuck u up in bed lol

don't worry Anton with your qualities Employers will be tripping over themselves to sign you up
as others have said, shame your not down south
