THREE men who attempted to smuggle over half a ton of cocaine into the UK, after hiding it amongst lobster pots anchored off the Isle of Wight, have lost appeals against their hefty jail terms.
Fishing boat captain Jamie Peter Green, 43, crew member Daniel Mark Payne, 37, and scaffolder Jonathan Beere, 43, plotted to retrieve 11 watertight holdalls of high-purity cocaine, worth £53m, in May 2010, along with two other men.
Green, of Newport Road, Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, Payne, of Kings Road, East Cowes, and Beere of Mayfield Road, Ryde, were convicted of conspiracy to import cocaine.
In June last year at Kingston Crown Court., Green and Beere were jailed for 24 years each while Payne was handed an 18-year term.
On Wednesday they asked Lady Justice Hallett, Mr Justice Griffith Williams and Mr Justice Singh, sitting at the Court of Appeal, for cuts in the sentences, but had their cases rejected.
During the hearing the court heard that an investigation by the Criminal Cases Review Commission is to take place regarding events in the jury room.
This could lead to further appeals against convictions. No further details of the investigation were given.
