SMSTS every time, Its such a shame that their are 100`s of courses out their that either do the same thing, or mean squat. Its just the latest money making scam for the construction Industry. Its about time someone from the top made a clear matrix of required certification for us. We are in a recession and tradesman who are not rich, want to develop and grow their careers into different avenues to better themselves are being convinced by legal conmen to invest in training that doesn't mean sh*t.

The smsts is more recognised within the construction industry with iosh being more outside of it either can be a pre requestie to a H&S job i did the 5 day smsts course earlier in the year & tbh honest personally i found it a lot of information to digest in a short period of time. Similar courses run the same format over day release or even home learning but much better to be in a group with other guys to bounce off . A £250 grant from the citb is available upon completion as well.

My old man has been a health and safety officer for 40 years and he swears by iosh managing safety. But as others have mentioned it depends on what sort of setting your in or going for

fair play to ur old man hemper didnt realise h&s excisted 40 years ago best thing ive learned this year so far lol

na seriously tho that will be my long term future iosh this year ( thanks to bobthescaff) who posted the link as didnt think of it and poss the nebosh general cert and again poss the diploma next year in theory lol

Why not look at the environmental courses? I know a guy who is environment manager for an Australian company and he is on mega bucks.
With the world focussing more and more on environmental issues this could be more lucrative. Eventually all companies will be expected to toe the line and this could be the next big thing.
If I was younger I would be getting into this

I didnt think h+s existed then myself but there you go lesson learnt. All the safety courses like iosh and nebosh are really worth while but haveaspannerwilltravel has a point regarding environmental courses. I would look both sides up and weigh up the options because in a career both could be good

The problem is hemper is that everyman and his brother in law have got the IOSH and NEBOSH these days. You only have to look at sites such as LinkedIn where people put the letters after their names.
I came across one HSE guy (a Brit) who called himself a doctor of health and safety because he had bought some dodgy degree or doctorate online from some US internet university!!
The Middle East and Asian subcontinent turn out NEBOSH qualifications by the thousands every month.
Going environmental for a youngster these days could be better option as HSE men are becoming ten a penny like scaffolders were when the CISRS churned out so many cards.

Couldn't agree more there mate your dead right and as you said earlier the environmental sector will be a major thing. Even me old man said every dipstick has nebosh and really dont truly understand what it is that they have.
