Injured scaffolder taken to hospital after fall at school

.Friday, August 31, 2012 Plymouth Herald

.A WORKMAN was taken to hospital after falling into a trench.

Paramedics and firefighters were called to Devonport High School for Boys, on Paradise Road, yesterday.

It followed reports that a 25-year-old scaffolder had fallen 5ft into a cable trench.

It is believed the man was working on an area of land to the back of the school when the incident happened.

Two fire engines from Greenbank, an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle rushed to the scene at around 9.30am.

Workmen used a digger to remove concrete slabs to enable the emergency services to get access to the injured man.

Five firemen helped three paramedics release the man from the trench and got him on to a stretcher before he was taken to Derriford Hospital via ambulance.

Watch Manager Rob Green, of Greenbank Fire Station, said: "The man seemed to be in a lot of pain.

"A specialist rescue team from Camels Head was also called but they were not required.

"The workmen had already removed the concrete slabs to allow us to gain access to the man."

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Trust said the man had suffered back injuries as a result of the fall and was taken to Derriford Hospital.
