Hundreds at Tata in Lackenby face the axeby Evening Gazette
May 20 2011
Hundreds of workers at Tata in Lackenby are facing the axe in the wake of a collapse in orders.
It is understood that around 300 workers could lose their jobs and as many as 1,200 at Tata’s Scunthorpe site.
The news is a huge blow for the region after a wave of good news followed the Tata deal with SSI to buy TCP at the former Corus site.
There has been a massive downturn in infrastructure investment and construction activity which has hit the company hard. The Government’s insistence on strict carbon penalties for industry was also a big setback for Tata.
Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland Labour MP, Tom Blenkinsop said he was "gutted" for local workers and families.
