Sullom Voe plans will create hundreds of jobs
Thursday, 29 November 2012 | Written by Shetland News

THE PARTNERS in Shetland’s Sullom Voe oil terminal are planning a massive investment in its long term future.

Terminal manager Arthur Spence told BBC Radio Shetland that hundreds of jobs will be created over the next five years as plant and pipework is renewed and a new gas processing facility is built.

The company will be considering building new accommodation or chartering a flotel to accommodate the construction workers.

Sullom Voe general manager Arthur SpenceSpence said the terminal was planning to squeeze a decade long programme of plant maintenance into just five years employing 200 people at the peak of the work in 2014.

He said they had yet to finalise their plans, but were thinking of ring fencing areas of the terminal while they were refurbished by dedicated teams.

Pipework will be inspected, insulation and lagging removed and scaffolding erected to clean, paint and replace pipes where necessary.

“This is really to make Sullom Voe fit for the next 25 years,” Spence said.

It will be a three to five year programme. We won’t have 200 people arriving at the gate at once, but will ramp up by 2014.”

The planned gas plant will process gas from west of Shetland prior to it being piped out to the Magnus field in the North Sea for onward export to the UK mainland.

“This is a major £200 million project that will run for about five years with a view to have it up and running by about 2017,” Spence said.

“It’s going to bring in a number of additional contractors and people into Sullom Voe, so will develop a strategy for how we accommodate all that staff.”

Meanwhile BP is planning additional developments of the Clair Ridge oil field west of Eshaness. Spence said he hoped that Shetland would continue to handle the oil from the Schiehallion field in the north Atlantic once it had been redeveloped in 2016.

Anything that attracts that sort of investment and creates that amount of work and jobs has to be welcomed.

And you can be guaranteed it will run way over the 200 million budget. Most jobs on that scale do

DID ANYONE NOTICE THE GAS IS FOR EXPORT
WHEN WE ARE BEING HELD TO RANSOM BY THE QATARI GOVERNMENT AND THE PRICES OF GAS ON THE OPEN MARKET SURELY THIS SHOULD BE MADE AVAILABLE FOR THE BRITISH CONSUMER:mad:

ID LIKE TO KNOW WHEN THIS IS DUE TO START AS THE TOTAL CONTRACT IS STILL NOT READY FOR THE STEEL ERECTORS YET

IS THAT YOU GETTING INTO THE NEW JOB BY POLITELY CORRECTING MY POST.THANKS HSWT BUT IVE GOT TO ADMIT I WAS SHOCKED WHEN I HEARD YOU TOOK ONE OF THE INTERNET POLICE JOBS
I MAY BE GETTING SLIGHTLY PARANOID AND READING INTO THINGS TOO MUCH BUT IS THAT WHY YOU WENT AFTER JASON AND THE ALGERIA FIASCO
BECAUSE YOU KNEW HE WAS A CONTENDOR:eek:

So you are still one of the boys then
get your name removed from the list only then will i fully trust you again ;)

Always one of the boys mate.I cant see what all the fuss is about. It hasnt changed my life at all. When I found out yesterday I thought everything would have changed and i would be able to erect a 8 x 8 tower that didnt fall over. Sadly i was wrong with the one I put up in the hotel reception.

Its good that some investment is being made in the UK. But 200 million over 3-5 years is hardly a big investment. Pales into insignificance when compared to the 35 billion dollars budget for the James Price Point gas hub

Yes we know there are much bigger investments being made all over the world but still happy to get a slice.;)

any jobs boost is welcomed especially when there is a thread about another company going bust and guys witing to see if they are getting payed their entitlement

No digs for Sullom Voe lads, you'll be put up with accommodation paid for by company. Was on a new build a few years back digging it, taking home a bag of sand a week on part 1 rate

This is the Bis number this should get you through to the shetland office
