am i breaking the rules by working on four boards on a five board scaffold inside a single handrail and not being hooked on :blink1:

Hiya pal and welcome.. unfortantly yeah your still breaking the law. Because you've got a single handrail, they say if you bend down to undo a fitting your below what they call " the scaffolders safe zone ". So you still need to be clipped on mate.

Everybody has a different view or understanding of it and as mentioned above, if you bend below the height of the guardrail to do a sway brace or whatever, you are meant to be clipped on. Another one people seem to forget, if you are handballing gear up, and bending down to retrieve it, you need a fully boarded fully guard railed platform. You really should have a copy of SG4:10 so you can work out what you can and cannot do.
