Health and Safety Today

I started scaffolding in 1986 with S.G.B. and now work in senior management, I am faced with daily contradictions regarding Health and Safety.
I leave one meeting stressing safety into another demanding extreme production deadlines, I have to balance the two and believe that we are now at the point where we are protecting insurance policies before people.
The best example of this is the difference between the method statement for de-slagging the old coal power station boilers when a tube leak was costing thousands of pounds and the actual method used.
Any thoughts ?

I now work mainly in H&S, but have a long background in scaffolding, from labourer to advanced to management.
I once went for an interview for a mangers job for some company in Peckham and when the guy interviewing me saw that i had recently passed my Nebosh Cert, he asked me if trying to be a manager of a scaffolding firm wasn't a conflict of interest with my safety values. I replied that i actually thought that they were complimentary to each other, but i knew from that monent that they didn't want me and i didn't really want them !
