Hi,
Does anyone know about GME and changes to pay? just been advise that work are putting me on GME and still expecting me to work. Usually this is the rate given if there is no work available and they are still entitled to pay the employees. Are they allowed to make this change?

hi mate,
do u work for sgb/harsco by any chance.

gme is your guranteed minimum earnings..in effect this is your contracted hourly rate as a scaffolder (the minimum they can pay you if you are available for work)
as you know day rates are somewhat considerably higher than this bcos otherwise they wouldnt get any decent scaffs.

it depends on whether your normally on day rate or price...if your on price they obviously have to pay you for what u do.

if your on a day rate (even if its only verbally agreed) they can not ask u to do the same amount of work for less money.
more often than not they will say that if u dont go on gme then they will have to lay people off usually if they dont have much work on.

my mates were put on gme when the recession first started but they still had plenty of work and were expected to do as much work as normal.
they contacted the union who advised them to keep a record of what output they had been giving over the last month or so and what they had been paid and then keep a record of what output they did for the next month and what they got paid (gme) the union then approached the firm and all monies were paid the following week.

however the week after everyone was put on price ??

i have a letter from our m.d. stating what gme is for, as some lads on our firm were not pulling their weight but still expected their gme.

the letter states that gme is paid for a day or part day that u are available for work but the company can not provide you with some.

sorry for the waffling but hope this makes sense. gme is a very grey area as are most things wen it comes to them trying to rip us off.

intersesting post , had never heard of this before

just sounds a way of knockin the daywork rate down , every firm has its dead wood

I have always worked on price.

30 year ago, if you didnt make your flat rate, they would pay you off. However, this was quite easy to make your money. You had the 6'6'' (2m) rule then, but you always booked in handrails on the 1st lift;)

Then it was single handrail and no Brickguards, no Loading-bay gate:eek:

Day works was paid at Time and a Half:love:

Now Day works flat time for Adjusting scaff,Installing Crashdecks etc:mad:

Had 5 weeks in the yard sorting kit = Flat time. Now rushed off our feet. They say it's Swings and Roundabouts, We as most of you's also, have not had a pay rise for 3 years (CIJC pay talks broke down again, next Talks October) and also had 10% reduction on our prices, yet Staff have had a pay rise every year.

We havent cut any ones pay , the money earners on the firm have had pay rises with in the last year or additional perks , we have several guys on here that we use just for the gash jobs and they havent had a pay rise for years this is what i refer to as the dead wood , come to work to do the minimum and earn basic wage
We have took a rate drop on most work we are doing but i believe in looking after the guys that are earning the company good money

I must admit, I have never heard of this either, but as I said on other threads this is just another reason I prefer an honest affordable hourly rate that allows us to keep the rate of pay steady during the difficult times. You will never earn your fortune working along side me but neither will you ever have to worry about next months mortgage payment.

fair comment aom , hope ya guys realise that

I think they do scaffy and the one or two that didn't get it were not long in finding out it's a big bad world out there. I reckon that's what being a manager is all about, trying to smooth out the bumps. We might earn a fair chunk on a couple of jobs but we have to cover our ass when the boy's are in the yard painting gear, hopefully works out about even.

yep we have that situation every xmas to mate , i always make a point of saying its costin me dough
