FIREFIGHTERS today rescued two builders who were injured after falling through scaffolding.
Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service was called at around 2.25pm to an incident at Hasfield House, Hasfield, near Tewkesbury.
Two builders had been working on a chimney at the property. They fell through a hole in scaffolding on to a platform below and had been injured by falling masonry.
Fourteen firefighters from Tewkesbury and Cheltenham stations attended. The cliff rescue team from Coleford was mobilised but then turned back as they were not needed.
Firefighters used the aerial ladder platform (ALP) from Cheltenham to reach the casualties and provide a stable platform for paramedics to treat their injuries. The men were then brought down to the ground on the ALP, one on a stretcher, and then taken to hospital by ambulance.
Group manager Simon McMillan, who was at the scene, said: “Our fire crews did an excellent job at what was a difficult incident. The injuries could have been much more severe had the men’s fall not been broken by a scaffolding platform below.
“They were, however, in some pain and the crews were able to reassure them and keep them calm before using the platform to allow paramedics to reach and treat them as quickly as possible.”
Cllr Will Windsor-Clive, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Gloucestershire Fire & Rescue Service, said: “Our crews are experienced in these situations and are used to working closely with their colleagues in the Ambulance Service to minimise distress to casualties. It is fortunate that the builders’ injuries were not more severe and that we were able to get help to them so quickly.”
