When you purchase a new Gin Wheel or Jenny wheel you are issued with a certificate of conformity and not a test certificate. That's because the wheels have been manufactured to specific standards and do not require testing.
The certificate of conformity for the Gin/Jenny wheel is acceptable as the test certificate. Although the wheels are not stamped SWL they do state the following: - 1)They have their own unique identification number.
2) They all state that the wheel has been tested to 1 Tonne.
3) They all state that the wheels are to lift 5 cwt or 250kgs.
A scaffolder lifting more than 5kgs at shoulder height with a Gin/Jenny wheel exceeds the Manual Handling Regulations 1992 guidelines which means that the employer will have to carry out a manual handling assessment of the employees lifting capabilities.
The wheel should be positioned at no more than 750mm from the outer standard.(overhang) With the wheel at 750mm the weight being lifted should be limited to a maximum of 50kgs. The tie transom supporting the wheel should be fixed to both inner and outer standards. any joints on that lift in the rear standard must be made with Class B sleeve couplings to EN 74 and check couplings should be installed on either side of the wheel.
The wheel should be formerly inspected at least every 12 months by a competent person. It is most important for a inspection tick list to be used so that as the important parts to be inspected do not get missed out.
The following link demonstrates what can happen if a wheel is not inspected or maintained properly.
Failure of gin wheels, NASC scaffolding alert.
