GE Oil & Gas plan £2bn oil refinery in Teesside
by Jez Davison, Evening GazetteAug 18 2011
A £2bn OIL processing scheme could be on its way to Teesside after a similar project was ditched more than two years ago.
GE Oil & Gas is planning to build an oil refinery in the region - with Wilton thought to be in pole position to host it.
Documents filed at the International Planning Commission show that GE intends to build a refinery capable of handling 11m tonnes of crude oil a year on Teesside, as well as harbour facilities for crude oil cargo and a 200-250 MW (megawatt) gas-fired power plant.
The commission expects GE to submit a formal application for the power plant by next summer.
The plans are very similar to those put forward by Sonhoe Development Company in 2007.
The firm intended to build a £2bn crude oil refinery at Wilton - an announcement described at the time as the most significant scheme for Teesside since ICI decided to locate there.
The scheme was expected to create more than 2,500 supply chain jobs and around 400 on-site jobs during construction and operation.
But it was put on the back burner after Sonhoe was wound up in 2009, despite regeneration chiefs claiming the project was still on track.
Now the scheme has been reinvigorated through GE, although a Teesside source, who did not want to be named, said it was too early to start shouting it from the rooftops.
He said: “It’s such a strategically important scheme. It could be great news if it comes off.
“But it’s not a done deal yet.
“A project of this scale will need a lot of funding behind it.
“If the scheme was worth £2bn in 2007, it might need £3bn or £4bn of investment now.”
At the time of going to press GE had not returned calls made by the Gazette.
