A DISUSED floating nightclub is sinking into the River Tees.

The Tuxedo Royale, once a popular nightspot docked near to the Riverside Stadium, is going down at its mooring near to the Transporter Bridge.

Off-shore contract worker Dave Fogerty, from Morecambe in Lincolnshire, contacted the Gazette after seeing the vessel sinking over the weekend.

The 43-year-old amateur photographer is working in the area as a skipper for Turbine Transfers.

He has been surveying the Tees Bay area and has also been snapping pictures of the Tuxedo Royale as it has descended deeper.

“Over the last few days it has got lower and lower in the water,” he said. “From about Thursday or Friday it has been noticeably moving. It has got worse and worse.”

The floating nightclub arrived at Middlesbrough Dock from Tyneside in March 2000.

It lasted for six years before Tees Valley Regeneration negotiated for it to be moved to allow the continued development of the Middlehaven site.

The boat was taken to Hartlepool for temporary storage but has now returned to Middlesbrough and is berthed in an Able UK dock.

No-one at the Billingham-based company was available for comment today.
