Ensus plant to shut down for up to four months

The Ensus plant in WiltonTHE £300m Ensus plant at Wilton is to shut down - possibly for as long as four months.

The site will stop producing ethanol within three weeks, with bosses blaming the EU for not being quick enough to enforce standards which would have protected Ensus against US imports.

The decision is a further blow to the company which has already had to spend almost £10m tackling an odour that has plagued nearby residents.

After this latest setback, bosses say they are confident they could be back up and running within two months - but they admit it could take twice as long for the market to change.

In the meantime, workers will stay fully employed but will be switched to other duties. There will be no layoffs while the plant is not producing.

Ensus chief executive Peter Sopp insisted the shutdown was nothing to do with the long-running odour problems.

He said: “Implementation of the Renewable Energy Initiative has been slow and the margins are just not sufficient for us to continue. We are confident in the future of the business but we have to come off for a short period.”

High wheat prices have not helped the market but Ensus blames the EU. “Direction from the EU for these new rules has been slow, which is disappointing. We now need action,” said Mr Sopp.
