Delight over the arrival of a new dawn at TCP

THAILAND’S SSI will receive “the keys to the house” of Teesside Cast Products tomorrow, as it takes over the plant and looks to re-ignite steelmaking at Redcar by end of the year.

SSI is making a $1bn investment in the future of Teesside steel with the purchase of TCP along with further investments which include improving the site and training.

It will revive a 150-year tradition on Teesside after the mighty blast furnace at Redcar was mothballed last February. The deal also secures 700 jobs at the site and will create a further 800.

Steel bosses from SSI and Tata Steel, along with unions, workers and members of the local community will come together at the Redcar site at 11am for the handover of the current TCP iron and steelmaking assets in Redcar from Tata Steel to SSI.

And Geoff Waterfield, multi-union works committee chairman, pictured above right, said it would be a day of celebration after two long years to save Teesside steel.

“It’s been a long old haul, two years of solid hard work,” he said, “but now we are on our way to re-starting steel production.

“It will take time to bring the blast furnace back on line - it has to be done in a controlled and steady manner.”
