we did a job for a regular customer and the lads damaged the living room window on a terraced house, to cut a long story short customer said its £800 to replace like for like, I ask the homeowner and he says £589 inc vat, (so our customer tried making a quick buck on us) householder say he will accept 2/3 as compensation but wants 2/3 at 589 with the vat included? this is after we offered 2/3rds without the vat as he say he may get a replacement in a few years and would have too pay the vat anyway:mad: bear in this mind the damage was a very very minor chip to his upvc window and a scratch to the glass

Source the window and someone to fit it yourself. I reckon you'd get it done a lot cheaper. Smashed the odd window myself with a stray double in my time. ;)

If it's very minor damage and they are taking the **** offer what's fair and if they aren't happy tell em to fek off

Offer him £100 as a gesture of goodwill but without excepting liability for the damage & just tell him your sorry but if he wants more than sue ya. Soynds like he's trying it on & the cost of the repairs will prob zero out the profit of the works.

There are several points to consider:
1) if you broke it, put it right
2) Get 3 written quotes for the work
3) pay the invoiced when the work is done.
4) He is a regular customer do you want he to remain so?
5) your customer may not be making a buck out of you but may have incurred or feel he will incur costs associated with the issue including his time.
6) if VAT is applicable pay it and claim it back if allowed
7) If you price a job at £589 and your customer offered you 2/3 as compensation what would your reaction be?
8) that's what insurance is for.

How Big is the feckin window??? £490 + vat is a fair old window, someone is having your pants down there!! Give us a shout and i'll fire some numbers over for good lads that could givce you a price, if its local

Sh it happens sometimes ,
I would get 3 quotes and send the glazier round to fit it ,
Then pay the glazier myself and get a vat invoice from him.

what I normally say to the customer ,
Is its no problem I will deal direct with house owner and make good the damage ,
So he don't have any stress ,
If the house owner is not happy with this then they should go to the small claims court and sue you for it ,
You can't loose as you have offered to make good the accidental damage the lads done .

A lot of firms in London years ago would make you pay for any damage , or stop you £3 a day fir insurance

I've just had 2 bedroom windows, one kitchen window and French doors replaced for £1750, through the books and a fensa certificate to, what a bargain.

Call your local plastic surgeon, google is your friend, we dropped a 5 foot tube on a window cill, two inch hole, all repaired for £40.00 !! looked like new, then a glazier to replace sealed unit/glass bet you get it done for half the price.

cheers guys,
Alan our customer wanted £800 to repair it, I went to the home owner direct and he got a quote from the upvc window fitter local to him at £589.00 inc vat, now the home owner has contacted me saying he doesn't want the hassle of taking time off work whilst the repair is done and would rather us pay him 2/3rds of the total price inc vat as compensation. the insurance excess is higher than the amount and we are trying to put it right but feel hard ddon by when your own customer tries make a quick buck and then you feel the homeownwer is being hard work.

If you take that route, there's more than one way to skin a cat, just add £100.00 on to Alan's next four jobs.....sorted.

If your customer is too expensive don't use him.
It would appear that the home owner is prepared to live with the damage if you pay him, remove the vat from the quote as vat will not be paid on your settlement, make him a reasonable offer you can both live with and move on.

Will crack a beer and move on made him an offer he accepted, just hate paying so much for a small chip in the plastic that anybody else would probably not be arsed about that is so small you have to search for it,

there tossers. 1 of the lads chipped and old chimney pot that was used in the garden for flowers it was a 4 ft pot a chips the size of 5p. she was right out and she strung a line of its sentimental to me cost 50 quid and a bunch of flowers. as long as they get something with out the hassel for a replacment there happy if you were to suggest youll pay your self and get a conrtactor in they come up with all sorts of **** why that can not be the case and just want the money. god loves a tryer
