Three contractors have been fined after a worker fell from scaffolding and suffered life changing injuries.

Jeremy Bishop was working on a domestic house extension when the accident happened in January 2010. He was stood on scaffolding so that he could work re-roofing the building.

Unfortunately, whilst up there, he fell from the scaffold and landed on the floor some five metres below. He suffered serious injuries in the fall, with damage to his head, back and chest. He was airlifted to hospital where he spent a lengthy period of time. The injuries mean he will require a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

The HSE found that guard rails were missing from part of the scaffold structure. They prosecuted three contractors in regards to the safety failings that led to Mr Bishop’s injuries.

The main contractor, Vincent Page – from V. Page Building Services Ltd – was contracted to build the extension. He was fined £20,000 at court this month for breaking work at height regulations.

The director of Quality Roofs Ltd – Alan Tyler – who had been sub-contracted to undertake the roofing work was fined £20,000, with the company fined a further £10,000.

Finally, the installer of the scaffolding, Philip Blakeman – trading as Access Specialists – was fined £3,000.
