CISRS COTS Training Launched At Teeside
The one-day CISRS Operative Training Courses (COTS) in the UK are off the ground – with two courses taking place at NETA Training in Stockton-On-Tees this week.
The new CISRS COTS training courses make it a requirement for any new entrant scaffolding trainee or scaffolding labourer to complete the one-day course before an initial trainee or scaffolding labourer card can be issued.
Amongst the delegates taking part in the first COTS course were operatives from NASC members Swale Scaffolding Ltd. The course has both theoretical and practical elements including a CISRS Operative Training Scheme PowerPoint, NASC SG6 Manual Handling DVD followed by a practical session, an HSE Introduction to scaffolding power point, a short demonstration DVD and practical session on knots and a selection of relevant NASC guidance notes.
The course content is listed below:
· Relevant Regulations and Codes of Practice
· General Responsibilities
· Basic Scaffold Terminology (Components & Application)
· Servicing of Equipment, Tube, Fittings etc.
· Boards & Stock - Quality Control
· Health, Welfare, Hygiene & Housekeeping
· Electrical Safety
· Fire Prevention & Control
· Noise & Vibration
· Work at Height
· Accident Prevention & Reporting
· Personal Protective Equipment
· Site Transport Safety (Including Loading & Unloading)
· Equipment & Tools
· Manual Handling (Including a practical session)
· Lifting Equipment Using a Rope & Wheel (including a practical session)
· Questions/Test Paper
Fran Michna, Scaffolding Instructor at NETA Training, who conducted these first COTS courses, said: “When l first looked at the course content, I thought ‘there’s a lot to cover in one day.’ But having run the course twice now, l actually think it is a very good course – it makes candidates who want to come into a career in scaffolding think about the many environments that they could work in.“Having been in the scaffolding industry for 43 years, everything that was in the COTS course l have experienced at some time or other in my working life. The feedback from the delegates after completing the two courses has been positive and we had some very interesting discussions on the content whilst the training was taking place”
As well as new entrants to the scheme, existing CISRS Scaffolding Labourer cardholders will be required to complete the course on a 5 yearly cycle upon expiry of their current card and prior to a new card being issued as part of a new ‘CISRS Scaffolding Labourer Refresher Training’ scheme.
David Mosley, CISRS Training Manager said: “Congratulations to NETA for getting the new COTS courses off the ground so successfully, we are all very pleased that the delegates took a full and active role and appreciated the value of the course. This one-day course is a very full one and has a lot of important information to get across to the delegates. It is a great introduction to anyone starting out in the industry or alternatively someone who has not attended any recognised training in several years as it covers all of the essentials that they need to know about when working on site”
Having only been launched on the 1st of September the course is in its infancy. However the industry seems to be responding positively to its introduction with a steady stream of enquiries and bookings being made. The course is available at CISRS centres across the UK and those with onsite accreditation could carry out this training peripatetically if required.
Further information about CISRS COTS and other training schemes can be found on the CISRS website CISRS or by emailing enquiries@cisrs.org.uk.
