Carbon monoxide leak at Redcar steel plant

by Ian McNeal, Evening GazetteOct 10 2011

A leak of carbon monoxide caused disruption at a Redcar steel plant today.

Bosses at Thai company SSI confirmed the leak came from the Redcar coke ovens plant at around 7.45am.

Spokesman John Baker said: “Precautions taken included the activation of the containment procedure at the Redcar site to alert employees to go indoors, as well as notifying neighbouring businesses and the authorities that we were dealing with the situation.

“The South Gare Road was closed temporarily.”

There are no reports of anyone being harmed and plant operations were not disrupted.

However, around 400 workers, including contractors, were onsite at the time.

The incident may have caused inconvenience to drivers on the Trunk Road as the procedure meant that access to the Redcar site was disrupted.

The incident was over shortly after 9am.

Emergency service crews were not required.
