I want to make a canopy for my boat on its trailer in the boat yard using scaffolding poles, so that I can work on it in the winter months and protect it from the weather

Dimensions approx 6 m long x 3m wide by 3m to ridge and 2m to 'eaves'.

Any advice where I might get some cheap poles prefer aluminium due to lightness or possibly GRP, I am 66 years old and not as agile as I used to be!!

Anyone got any advice of where I might get some cheap used poles and sockets to join them. I want to avoid conventional scaffold joints as they have sharp edges and they will quickly put a hole in my tarp.

Tbh m8 nothings cheep these days either the materials, delivery or the labour.

you may at your age & with no experiance find it easier & safer to get a local company to purchase the materials from & ask a cpl of their guys to put it up on a saturday morning for some beer tokens & bacon butties for you

Ok thanks, yes I did consider that but wanted to explore all options. Thanks for reply

Peter the structure will have to be "braced" and "tied down" in some form, to resist wind and gales through the winter, and to afford you a nice snug workshop for the boat maintenance.

Follow the good advice of S/P and find yourself a small local scaffold firm to assist you. Do not become penny wise and £££ foolish and good luck with your project.

Hi there bud, if you have a look on gum (tree) "unaware of advertisement Law on here" am just a scaff... there are individuals selling scaff tube on there, not ally but! However have you approached any near buy scaffold companys " where is your boat kept Renfrew?? Say Paisley/ Renfrew they my have old tube lying around the yard they would give you???

OK thanks all for your replies. I have modified my plans. Last winter I used the mast over the centre of the boat fore and aft to form a tent.

This year I am storing the mast elsewhere hence the idea of a shelter instead By some amazing luck I found a scaffolding pole exactly the right length, about 20ft, for my boat lying in a hedge at the boatyard which I can borrow for the winter.

I am currently making some props to support it on the deck and I will form a tent this way. It will be a better more economical solution and it worked last winter using the mast and tying the tarp down to the trailer.

Thanks again all for taking the time and trouble to advise me , much appreciated.
