Bogus builders steal £3,000 of scaffolding

1:40pm Monday 28th May 2012 in Southampton

Bogus builders steal £3,000 of scaffolding POSING as builders, thieves stole £3,000 of scaffolding from a building in Southampton.

The gang dismantled the poles from a temporary construction site in Milner Court in Shirley.

They then piled them up on the back of a flat-bed truck before driving off.

Police believe the scaffolding could be sold as scrap.

Details of the theft last Thursday, between 5am and 7am, have been released as police step up their enquiries and appeal for witnesses.

PC Jordan Williams, at Shirley Police Station, said: “I am appealing for anyone who saw a vehicle being loaded up.

Although early morning, many people would be leaving for work and so would have been passing.

“The people responsible showed no fear of being seen as they made lots of noise when loading their vehicle.

“I am also asking if anyone knows the whereabouts of the scaffolding now. All the poles were painted green on the ends and are quite distinctive.

One of the ladders stolen was bright orange and marked with blue paint.

“If you know who is responsible or where the stolen property is now, please contact me directly or Crimestoppers anonymously.

“This is a high value theft which will have an impact on the business concerned.”

As reported in the Daily Echo, thieves stole scaffolding in a similar way from a block of flats in Chelverston Crescent, Lordshill, in March.

Anyone with information can contact PC William at Shirley Police Station on 101.

UT OH the pikeys have cottoned on to impact wrenches as they couldn't work out the old style spanner, leftey loosey rightey on the back of a pick up truck.

'One of the ladders stolen was bright orange'

That should narrow it down a bit...

This ain't nothing new, i'm afraid.
When I was working on my Dad's firm back in the late 80', we went to take a front only down on Battersea Bridge road ( 20' x 30' high ). The scaffold had gone and the woman in the house said it was taken down a few days before, nice and early in the morning.
She even made them a cup of tea which they had!! More front than Sainsburys!!LOL

“This is a high value theft

Unfortunate for the company whos gear it was. However if 3 grand is considered high value it just proves what a ***** hole Southampton is.

Maybe the Southampton old bill will join with the Met. It might be an Al Quaeda plan. Nick all the gear and those infidel British scaffs will have to come to Algeria and we can kidnap them????

back in the 80s it was quite a regular occurance to rock up on site only to find the scaffold had been stolen - about 2 years ago we had about 200 brds lifted of the scaffold never to be seen again, seems to coincide with either a shortage of materials or a large price rise...surprised they havent started again now thT THE THE PRICE OF SCRAP IS AT AN ALL TIME HIGH

Nothing new at all. I started on one firm early 90's and their induction was a price list and slogan steal for me not from me, sign on day is a Wednesday. The only bit of ham on offer was to dismantle a small street job built by an outside firm in their area. I declined but when I came back it was gone anyway, they had 3 guy's working through the night painting gear.

"Knock down " gangs where big in the 70s-80s , some firms even sent lads to take jobs down and the lads didnt even know they where stealing them unless challenged and then it was put down to a mistake in the office , wrong address given to the lads etc etc

There used to be a load of gypsies around Aylesbury who had an old UBM lorry. They used to spot the UBM jobs and have them away or the gear if it had been delivered.
