We have a big light well erected 40 x 13 x 9 lifts high fully boarded as a birdcage
and the lads that have been doing the work there have been ripping out some old lagging and discovered that it contains brown asbestos and the job has been stopped until further notice.
My question is where do we stand in terms of striking the job as in my mind the scaffold is contaminated, and how can i be certain that my lads will be safe to take the job down ?

Get the client to ensure that the scaffold is vacuumed washed and every board is tested before you start to strike, also all your lads will now need asbestos awareness training
Feck me think of all the ££££££ in extras

surely they should of know that "old" lagging.. .would have azzy in it..

VERY VERY DODGY SITUATION you are in now Phillio
The Bug killed my Da and is the cause of my Wee Mammys sad demise, due to the **** on his painters coveralls.
I dont know the best way to deal with it but the contract is now an ASBESTOS JOB AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH,the HSE Website has a wee guide i memory serves me right.
Me personally i would get rid of all the material as the fibres are microscopic and could be anywhere

Tell them to keep the brds & you want new ones in replacement as well as all ur tube washed down & tested

assuming you dont have an asbestos licence I dont think you can go anywhere near it until the asbestos specialist has issued a clearance certificate, as the other guys have said nasty stuff and i doubt you will get clearance on the boards. Best of luck with it

asbestos awareness course!!!! Woopee ive got an asbestos awareness ticket, which might be useful to get a start on some jobs. courses are a load of tosh, its an industry on its own, surely would take years to understand the different forms of asbestos . And where would kit be washed,on the drive with a hose??? Good luck with that Phil.

I did an asbestos awarness course a few years back, think the tickrt only lasted for a year.

As sp said the boards r fu(ked, the barbs in the azzy hook in them and they stay there

Bill them for a complete replacement of equipment and then tell them its theres!

Not worth putting your blokes at risk

When SGB supplied a birdcage to the old turbine hall during the strip out and demo of the Poplar power station. all boards were sale only to the contractor and were disposed of by the asbestos contractor. All tube and fittings were cleaned off also by them.
Asbestos is the silent killer.

Quick update lads, we are not allowed anywhere near it and a asbestos firm will be contracted to take the scaffold down, seal it all in plastic, remove it from site, clean it and then re-test it we will keep the kit on hire and be fully compensated for any kit that we can't have back which will be the boards all 475 of them as the asbestos guy said they can never get them 100% clean as the fibres could dig right in. So it is the best outcome from my point of view.

Looks like the main contractor is sorting things out. Good to see things being done properly.

As far as the asbestos is concerned this is the correct outcome. Will they be billing you for the scaffold dismantle time expended by the asbestos operatives? Their bill may well be far higher than you had labour allowed for in your own quote. Have they mentioned 'add and omit's' yet?

Im intrigued now. Who would the asbesto's company use to strike. Would have to be scaffs surely. Will it be struck at the end of the job it was erected for. Does this mean scaffold has to be struck and replaced immediatley(cant see it.)

Iam not sure Fred but within that court yard there are 24 windows on each floor X 8 floors so 192 in total so i would expect that a few would be opened at some point while the job was going on.

Binthere no mention of cost regards striking the scaffold and i have already had the invoice payed.

hi pal and don't forget to keep your over hire running until all materials are replaced and insist on a interim payment when the job comes down this gear will make you money reimbursed obviously but will loose you money not having the availability of stock for other jobs all the best maximo scc
