Are there any lads on here that are working or have worked in Doha, Quatar or the middle east. Would like to find out what pay, conditions etc are like out there. Cheers

the rate for a basic scaffolder in Dubai currently is about AED2500 a month for a six day week plus dorm accomadation and use of a kitchen.
Needless to say there are not too many scaffies from Europe

Iam a part 2 with 5 years experience. Quite new to the game. Mainly done site work and some street work. No really big jobs as yet. Just looking for a change and seen a few jobs advertised for doha, dubai etc.

Why not apply for some of the managerial jobs advertised then? That is what I did years ago. Didn't even have 5 years experience and was only a part one back then.

There are a lot of people from India, Pakistan,Bangladesh,Nepal, Philippines over here that are chasing the supervisor jobs as well. they have the certificates that show they have done part 1 or part 2, but most of them are photocopies with the names changed. That has killed the expats from working in our game over here......so unless you go for a job where they want genuine qualifications such as the oil & gas sector then you will get undercut all the way...besides if you don't have the skill set or paperwork then you won't be able to climb over them......Now they are sending trainers out here from the UK to train these lads from Asia to work as trainers and giving them all the paperwork in the process and their eyes are set on the top jobs here as well, so it's only a matter of time before they control all the scaffolding in this part of the world....

To be fair the fake qualification thing started in the UK in a car park in a North East industrial town.
There have been training and certification companies in the Gulf for over 20 years now such as Velosi. There are a lot more such as Simian and Safety Access who have recently turned up there to take a slice of the pie. They are closely aligned with CISRS and NASC who must share part of the blame. However the reason there are less jobs for Westerners is partly financial as the TCN's are a lot cheaper to employ and actually are fantastic value for money.
There are still managerial jobs for Westerners in both construction and O&G sectors and I have been offered two this year already but have decided to venture elsewhere. What is true however the lucrative jobs where people could be well paid for playing golf or lounging by the pool leaving the Asians to run the show have generally long gone. As you sow then shall you reap. We only have ourselves to blame.

I have nothing against the Asian lads ......In summer they work in 45° heat without so much as a complaint, and all this is in a boiler suit, boots, hard hat, gloves, safety eye ware, hi-viz vest and a full double lanyard harness....I can't imagine the scaffs from the UK accepting that with out a load of fuss....they start at 7:00 sharp..only stop for one hour at mid day and work through till 5:00. and this they happily do for less than £15 a day. So your right with the value for money...I am lucky to have been offered a job by an oil company overseeing the quality of work and we have been using Simian for some of the training on our project. We have had plenty of dodgy certs submitted and rejected in the last 3 years...that is why we needed to get the training done here in Dubai before Simon and Ian got started with the oversea's CISRS they are now offering. The dodgy stuff seen to be the old CITB certificates from local training providers that run the zero to hero in 15 day courses.....

having a small taste of the sand pitt i have myself came across the same issues although a certain training supplier was USED by the indians as their new supplier of ADVANCED SCAFFOLD INSPECTOR CERTS.
This was NOT the trainers fault but the fault of the MAJOR BRITISH BASED SCAFFOLDING AND INDUSTRIAL SERVICES COMPANY who are run by Indians in Qatar.
But just like Shipbuilding when Scott Lithgows taught the Japs to build Twin Hulled Tankers
WE REAP WHAT WE SOWE;)
