i,ve been a member for a few days now, just finding my way around.
im from south queensferry near edinburgh. been in the game for about 17 years now(since i left school). currently working at methil rig yard. man that place seems to be stuck in a time warp.:) anyway, just thought i would properly introduce myself.

Hi Jamie and Welcome To The Scaffolders Forum!

Welcome to the Site---what are you working on in the Yard ?---is it Oil and Gas related...

Garry...

methil

alright garry, thanks for the welcome.
sorry about the delay as im on night shift and sometimes i cant be bothered.
were working on new energy at the moment, so were doing the jackets for wind turbines that are going to be floated down to the thames. in total i think there are 32 getting done, not one is complete yet and they are expecting the last one to be finished by september, no chance.

jj

Thats good that the Yard has found work---cutting edge Energy Technoligies---must be interesting work ?---will you be Installing and Commissioning the Wind Turbines ?---I was talking with a Guy with SkyForm ( Powerd Access Cradels ) they use Cradels inside the Collume for access to the Top Workings...

alright garry,
we aren't working on the mast, i dont know where they are getting done. its just the jackets and decks for the masts. it's all good when were doing beam work or hanging off friction clamps :smile1:but a lot is yelly jelly:mad: and gets a bit monotinous. what about yourself. i take it your on the rigs.

JJ

I was going to ask if youz were using friction clamps given the cylindrical steel work---a Manufacturer in China is interested in manufacturing the Friction Clamps, I was going to send him a FC for a template to work too, it's just that he needs a minimum order---do you access your Friction Clamps from Scaffolding Supplies ?. GKN Mills Patented the FC in 1982, But the Manufacturing Base in the UK stopped production, therefore, there is a Market for re-furbed and new FC's...

Im taking a wee break from the Offshore at the moment, grtin into Scaffold Engineering---still got mi Tartan Banners though ;)

Garry...

alright garry,
i worked in methil years ago and i think it is all the same gear that was already in there. i dont know who supplied the fc's but i'll ask my gaffer tonight to see if he knows anything. if that fails, i'll make a point to see the day shift gaffer. he's the one that hires materials in. good luck with the engineering side of things, it's bound to be easier on the body. i've been thinking about a change too, dont know what though, all i know is scaffolding.

Aye, would be interesting to know just how many Scaffolding and Service Companies are still using the FC---it's still a good peice of kit, however, it is a Specialisim eh---

Career Path---I would not deviate to far from Scaffolding---however, Our Industry is changing and there is now a recognised need for Scaffold Engineers, Desingers, Specialist Scaffolding Safety Inspectors, ect---perhaps this is an area where you might consider ???.

alright garry,
beaver 84 supply the fc so im told. i think they have a depot out at livingston.
im going to have to do a little homework to see what direction i want to go in. how long have you been doing the engineering, what does the training entail. i would appreciate if you could give me some info.

JJ

Thanks for the info on Beaver---

Aye, the Engineering, Iv been trying to lobby for a Scaffolding Engineering Qualification, at the moment we can only Study Civil, Mechcanical and or Structional Engineering---you would need some sort of Engineering Qualification, HNC at least to start to start to Study for Scaffold Design CAD, ask who generates you CAD Drawings in the Yard and express your interest in Training for a Post in the Scaffold Design Department---OR. I you would like to go into Occupational Health and Safety you could Study for NEBOSH Qualifications ( National Examination Board for Occupational Health and Safety ) then you could apply for a Scaffold Inspectors Job.

Just a couple of pointers---but ask at the Yard---no harm in asking eh ?

You could Study at Evening Classes or home Study...

cheers garry,
something to look into. its the day shift foreman that does all the drawings, i don't think he's actually qualified though. they seem to get away with murder in that yard. but cheers for the feedback.
