Bideford man caught drink-driving after being pulled over for defective brake light

A SCAFFOLDER who enjoyed a few drinks after work with friends was caught drink-driving after being pulled over by police for having a defective brake light.
Darren Hookway, 41, of 1 Richards Close, Bideford, was found to have 57 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath when he was stopped by officers in Barbican Road in Barnstaple on September 1. The legal limit is 35.
He pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge when he appeared before North Devon Magistrates' Court on Friday.
Ben Winzer, for the prosecution, said the defendant was stopped by officers on patrol at about 10.30pm as they believed he was breaking the 30mph speed limit.
Nigel Treasaden, for the defence, said Hookway had worked all day without any lunch and then went to a friend's house where he drank three cans of lager.
He said: "He was pulled over because he had a defective brake light. It was an unfortunate incident, he thought he was fine to drive."
Mr Treasaden said the loss of his driving licence would have a significant effect on the father-of-four as he drives lorries and trains apprentices.
His dad was in hospital and his mum depended on him taking her to visit him.
Hookway was banned from driving for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay a £300 fine, £15 victim surcharge and £85 costs
