MORE than 1,500 Teessiders have joined the jobs queue in January, official figures have shown - more than double a month earlier.

As unemployment rose by 1,648 in the last four weeks to 28,960, Middlesbrough topped the North-east unemployment chart.

In January 7,491 people were claiming Job Seekers Allowance in the borough, giving Middlesbrough an unemployment rate of 8%.

Hartlepool also has an unemployment rate of 8% with 4,633 people unemployed.

And compared with the rest of the UK, Middlesbrough has the second highest rate of unemployment followed by Hartlepool in third place.

Other rates are: Redcar 5,853 (6.8%); Stockton 7,227 (5.8%) and Darlington 3,756 (5.9%).

Figures from the Office For National Statistics also showed the North-east continued to have the highest rate of unemployment at 11.2% although the jobless figure fell 4,000 to 143,000 between October and December.

Across the UK the unemployment rate increased to a 16-year high.

Unemployment jumped by 48,000 in the quarter to December to 2.67 million, a jobless rate of 8.4%, the worst figure since the end of 1995.
