£3 million upgrade to electricity line will increase town's capacity .
Wednesday, March 07, 2012 Crawley News

WORK is about to start on a £3 million project to upgrade overhead electricity lines supplying Crawley.

UK Power Networks will be replacing all of the overhead conductors on a circuit between Three Bridges and Bolney to provide extra capacity.

The circuit supplies nearly 58,000 customers plus Gatwick Airport and some of the rail network.

The route involves about 18km of overhead lines, some of which cross the M23.

Scaffolding will be needed in Three Bridges where the overhead lines cross the railway.

All the scaffolding work will be carried out at night to avoid disruption to rail services.

The improvement work will involve a conductor that can carry more current being installed.

A new form of insulation will also be used, which is more resistant to vandalism.

Project engineer Danny Sole said: "The work has been carefully planned to cause minimum disruption to residents and businesses.

"We liaised in advance with local landowners who may be affected because we are crossing their land but otherwise people should hardly notice anything is happening. People may see our teams working on the route between March and July but the job will be completed on a section-by-section basis and will therefore be relatively short term at each location.

"There will be no disruption to the power supply in Crawley and the only road closures may be a couple of short-term ones, where residents will be informed in advance. We will also have to close a couple of footpaths in Crawley but again this will only be short term."

Work on the lines started last Friday and the project is scheduled to last 16 weeks.
