THIEVES stole £100,000 of scaffolding from a building site – using contractors' equipment to make off with their haul.

Keepmoat's housing development at the former Amy Johnson School site in Hull was broken into by thieves some time over the weekend.

Not only did they make off with five pallets of scaffolding and siphon diesel from vehicles, police also believe the thieves used a forklift truck from the site to transfer the pallets on to a getaway vehicle.

The theft came at a time when the city has seen a sharp rise in metal thefts for scrap.

Sergeant Julian Hart, neighbourhood policing metal theft lead for Hull, said: "Metal theft nationally is on the rise and in Hull, we have also been experiencing an increased number of metal thefts from houses, gardens and commercial businesses.

"This is a particularly high-value theft. We are informing scrap dealers about it so they can report any suspicious metal being brought into their premises to the police.

"This tactic has led to a number of arrests in recent months."

Despite the theft, Keepmoat is keen to emphasise it will not delay building work at the site off Hawthorne Avenue.

About 140 homes are being built in the first phase, with 600 earmarked for the site.

A Keepmoat spokesman said: "The site does have a security presence at all times. Someone is there 24/7.

"But it is a large site. We are having a look at the security arrangements in light of what has happened.

"Although it has been an inconvenience, this theft will not affect the building programme."

Jim Hoyleys, who owns the Seaways fish and chip shop opposite the site, said a lot of people were waiting for the new houses. He added: "They really should be looking at security if they can make off with that much scaffolding."

Anyone with information should call Humberside Police on 0845 6060222 quoting crime reference number 1869016.

No chance there was that much gear on site insurance claim getting ramped up there £100k not bad start for next year ?

what a load of ********.
20k a pallet my backside. more like 10k in total being a keepmoat site it's likely to be t&f.
but even a system would be no where near that cost.
and is anyone really surprised that a security man was there. £100 to look the other way almost doubles his takehome pay.

Sign 'o' the times

Saw this in my local paper today thieves stole £100,000 of scaffolding some time over the weekend they used a forklift off the site to load scaffolding on to lorry and just for good measure they siphoned a load of diesel from the site . The thing what gets me is the area It got nicked from is a bit ropey it's getting regenerated but it's a busy road and loads of houses surely someone must of heard something a forklift banging around a muddy site loading hundred grands worth of tube or if it was middle of the night someone must of drove by and thought them lads are working late if it was stolen locally it's a bit of a closed shop that estate so no will break ranks but it's these people the houses are getting built for ungrateful b******s but like I said sign 'o' the times when you carnt leave gear on site without it getting lifted.

if it was tube and fitting even new you woud want a good haf a dozon trucks to move this must of been all the gear for all the houses lol

Press talking shiit again and a company trying to rip the ins off what in turn pushes everyone's insurance up wankerss

Can't believe some people did a job for one of our regulars and they subbed the roofing work out to anouther roofer and this lads blagging to me he can do a bit of scaffolding and all that say he used to do a bit with his mate, then starts telling me how they used to go around town dropping terraced houses nicking the gear. Proper DiKkhead I told him if I catch any of my gear going missing then I'm gonna drown him,
